Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit
The Arctic Centre and Rovaniemi City will host a biannual Arctic conference "Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit” (earlier “In the Spirit of Rovaniemi Process”) on November 14–16, 2017 in Lappia Hall. The conference is integrated with the 10th Polar Law Symposium, which will be held on November 13–14, 2017 in Arktikum.
Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit conference in November 2017 offers the opportunity to reflect on Arctic cooperation and its future. The year 2017 provides exceptional framework for the conference: Finland assumes the two-year rotating chairmanship position of the Arctic Council and celebrates its centennial anniversary. Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit is the first large scale public Arctic event of the chairmanship period.
The conference builds on the heritage of “Rovaniemi process”, the first step in official cooperation between the Arctic states. It led to the adoption of the Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy in 1991 and current Arctic Council structures are largely the result of the Rovaniemi process. Thus there is a tradition of strengthening peace, stability and cooperation in the Arctic region.
The success and importance of the Rovaniemi process have been the inspiration for the international Arctic conferences in 2013, 2015 and 2017, in Rovaniemi, Finland. The Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit 2017 aims to interactive and conversational format. This will provide an opportunity to approach a high profile Arctic themes, such as sustainable development and the current situation of the Arctic co-operation. While not being a part of the official program of the Arctic Council chairmanship the conference provides space for relevant and topical Arctic discussions.
Panel discussions during the two conference days will be built around specific themes. The conference program will be published in May 2017.
The Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit is integrated with the international Polar Law Symposium. In addition, the Arctic Sustainable Art & Design conference will be held as the additional event of the Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit. Furthermore, the opening of the Finnish Arctic Expo exhibition in Arktikum Science Centre will be held as part of the conference program. More activities will also be added during the conference preparations.
The conference is co-organized by the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and the City of Rovaniemi.
