28.1.2010 Schoolchildren in the Barents Region are happier than in the south

The schoolchildren from three age groups: 13-, 14- and 15-year-olds estimated their material well being higher and their social life more active than the pupils in their home country in general. Contentment in school and at home explains different factors in different countries. For example Finnish schoolchildren are the happiest with their life, but least content in the school, compared to schoolchildren in Norway, Sweden and Russia.

    - The importance of the school atmosphere was great; the other pupils’ and teachers’ support and schoolwork causing pressure were closely related to the contentment. These are key areas of school culture and everyday work and are therefore essential to pay attention to and take into serious consideration in every school, writes researcher Ahonen in his study.
